We live on this amazing planet called Earth. There will never be another planet which we call home, so we must take care of this one for generations to come. But what can we do to make certain this planet is taken care of for our children and our children’s children?
Earth Week is usually celebrated in late April. Groups of people get together to clean up the environment in their area. Some communities plant trees. People are encouraged to take litter-less lunches to school or work that week. Students are asked to walk to school, rather than using family vehicles, which use fuel. Anything that can be done to educate people on the three R’s (reduce, reuse, recycle) is done during this time.
The J.P. Robarts Home and School Association has decided to celebrate Earth Day by having a Used Clothing Sale on April 21 (during Earth Week). We are asking people to donate their gently used clothes to the school, and our parent volunteers will take time to sort the clothes into different categories. The Home and School will then sell as many articles of clothing as possible, during the event.
All articles will be sold for $1, with proceeds going towards making and distributing kindergarten welcome bags, to the families of JK students who will be starting school for the first time in the fall.
These families may be new to our school and what better way to make them feel like part of our extended family!
We wanted to do something else for the community — to show that J.P. Robarts is an active partner in our community in East London. We’ve decided that there will be no admission charged, but are asking the public to bring a donation for the Women’s Community House. Either a toiletry item (ie. toothpaste, soap) or a cash donation will be accepted at the door.
This is an event that involves students and their families, the community in which they live and the environment all around us. Probably the most important things in the world. Families take care of each other…community members care for each other…and everyone should care about the environment we live in. We hope you will join us!
